Maria Williams-Russell's debut chapbook is a dark and sometimes surreal collection where domestic life is not only lonely but buzzes with potential harm. Disillusioned, the poems offer language and images of home, motherhood and romantic love that come out of a resigned duress and which include bees, bats, car accidents, war, and strangers knocking at the door. Even so, the speaker of the poems finds ways to cope "...when the men walk through the house/ I pretend my body is the frame/ and they a flock of birds/ caught for a moment in the rafters."

Odd and beautiful, unusual, often striking, imagery.Images like these--two moths in the bottom of the sink, having been captured by a faucet running at night--are not easily forgotten. But Williams-Russell moves quickly from the moths to the shoes of dancers (still pointed), who have somehow fallen and died onstage. Then, in a deft move, she pulls us into her narrator's body, in such a way that we leave the poem in our sense of touch.
These are the kinds of poems whose images stay with you, likely to become a part your own private metaphorical language, as if you yourself had found the dancers, and cared enough about them to stay with them, making things for them you think they'll need.
And the moths? The poet needs them to fly us to the theater.

I love this book. I love its strangeness, how it presents domestic life from the wrong end of a telescope disconcerting, wavering & alien. I love how a shovel becomes animated to take on a leopard, how bats inhabit the eaves, how the workman arrive to seal up the house with the speaker in it. I love the children singing kettle songs ("I wish I were an engine, I wish I were a crow.")Edgy, tender, unexpected.
