Locked in pulls back the thick curtain holding many of the secrets inside Word of Faith Fellowship. This small mountain church in Spindale, NC first came to the national stage in 1995 when Inside Edition aired video which included their signature practice of blasting deliverance prayer. As the first published survivor memoir of this group, Locked in follows John’s journey of hope to live in “God’s ways” by moving his family to Spindale, only to discover the cult’s unique doctrines and practices destroy the family he loves and cherishes. Locked in examines these group practices including communal living, deliverance prayer, fund-raising, as well as revealing the essential beliefs and many unwritten rules governing each member.

We Americans LOVE our freedom. We’re proud to call ours a free country. So, how did several hundred freedom-loving Americans reach a point in their lives where they now allow their choices and actions to be dictated by one woman and her minions? The author of “Locked In” describes the step-by-step process that led his family into a North Carolina cult. And then he writes about what life is like inside such a controlled environment. As someone with several family members in WOFF, I appreciate gaining a better understanding of the “power of persuasion” that permeates the rigid leader-focused culture. Liberty for ALL. Locked in My Imprisoned Years in a Destructive Cult edition by John Huddle Barbara Evers Lorna Goldberg Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I was fascinated by this book, as I live with WOFF people as neighbors. I speak to them often when walking my dogs. This book gave more insight into just really is going on in those houses. I had heard stories, but getting it directly from a member solidified all rumors I had heard. I only hope is that more members will come to the same truth that John did. Evil is being used in the name of God.
Tackling this topic is difficult and could take both the author - as he admitted - and the readers through some dark places. John was able to give a descriptive account of his experience in a seeious but not too heavy narrative. Part of the strength of the deception in a cult settings is the isolation. Even after leaving the cult environment, the feelings of isolation linger. Finding the support of others who have had similar experiences can help tremendously in the transition to normalcy, even 17 years later, as in my case. Thank you, John, for putting the thoughts and feelings of many who did not or could not to ink and paper. We hope together for safe and peaceful exit for our loved ones.
This is something you read about that always occurs someplace else, not where you grew up and called home. It saddens me to see how easily it is for people to fall under the spell of mind control. A lot of people will say " I would never let that happen to me." I'm sure no one that entered WOFF thought that would ever happen to them. I still find it disturbing that is happening in my home county. WOFF is located on Old Flynn Rd, that road was named after my grandfather's brother. Flynn Rd in Rutherfordton was named after my grandfather. They would be turning in their graves if they knew that was occurring. Also, it's very disturbing to see how untouchable they are when you have the legal community, medical, law enforcement, political and business community involved. I really feel for the families and children that have grown up in this. It may not happen in this lifetime but, I am confident God will deal with Jane Whaley and it will not be a pretty sight.
Riveting! Thank you John for sharing your story. I was once a member of a sister church that attended the seminars. In the beginning, the singing and unity of the different cultures worshipping together was fascinating and gave me a glimpse of what I thought heaven might look like. While I did not live in Spindale, my church drove a caravan at least twice a year or more when I attended in the 90s up to early 2000s.. I recall sitting in a seminar toward the end of my visits and while the Head was preaching--I already had a concern about the way she screamed at folk and acted like she was the Messiah, but I kept those thoughts to myself. One service she walked in screaming at one of her main female members in front of a packed sanctuary. I heard myself say on the inside, "She is manifesting!" I did say it to my children who were preteens. They thought I was crazy then but we talk about it now among other things, always giving thanks to God that we moved on early. (What you shared is true. I sat in a meeting with the ladies while they discussed submitting intimate times to a leader. I thought they had lost their minds and never practiced it. It is interesting though, that while the ladies were getting their pep talk about intimacy, the Head female was instructing the men since everyone else, of course in her view, was full of the unclean.)
I appreciate the level of truth taught by my pastor who is now deceased. He attempted to conform but eventually pulled out because he was the real deal unlike the unjust judge who seeks to rule and reign. May God have mercy on separated families. PTL, my family got out in time.
I know John personally. We went to church together for many years. He was a good Christian man full of the love of God. He sure didn't do anything to deserve the kind of treatment he got from this so called "church" or his wife and children. You just don't shun people because they question your ways of treating people. That church lost the love of God and traded it for judgement of others. Like the bible says judge not lest you be judged. Screaming at people is not going to win people to God. When you act one way with your church people in private and act so loving in public something is wrong. I pray God will open these people's eyes and set them free. The book was an eye opening experience and my heart goes out to both John and his broken family. Jesus never judged people. They should learn from His example. Owe know man anything but love. They called what they did love but I sure didn't feel love towards the end. I finally left too. Jesus, set your people free. Amen.
This book superbly defines what life is like in WOFF! I started reading the book yesterday when I got home from work and just finished it today! As a former WOFF member I can attest to what John has so meticulously detailed in this book. John reveals not only the day to day events that dictates life at WOFF but the constant mental anguish of being in such a controlled atmosphere. Reading this book has flooded me with memories and the mental anguish I went through while there and the heartbreak of eventually leaving my family behind to escape. The events John describes in this book are very real as I was with John at many of them described in this book. If you want to know what a controlling cult is like in the 21st century this book adequately defines it!
