Having recently finished reading Thunderhead for the first time as an adult, I loved it, but not at first. What I mean is that I loved the beginning of the book because it continued the story of Ken and Flicka and focuses on her first colt, Thunderhead. I loved the book until Nell was struggling in her marriage. I had taken the time to read Mary O'Hara's biography online and hated that Nell and Rob were falling further and further apart. I thought the author was going to have them end in divorce, which I would have hated, but she brilliantly brought about a restoration later on and then continued with Ken's and Thunderhead's stories.

I learned something about horses and about life on a ranch from these books. I loved horses as a girl. When I was 11 and learned that all my friends loved horses, too, I felt like it was no longer unique, and I cooled some of my love for horses. As an adult, that love of horses and of horse stories is rekindled. I feel this book could be used in an educational springboard to learn more about horses, the time period that Nell and Rob and the family went through, and what horse ranching is like.

I think it was a brilliant novel.

Thunderhead Mary O'Hara 9781405210010 Books Reviews

One of a trilogy in the "My Friend Flicka" series, I needed Thunderhead to complete my series. An old favorite.
Loved it when I was a teenager and loved the fact that MY teenaged granddaughter loved it too.
The book was prefect! Thank you so much
I am over halfway thru this book, started last night, find it hard to put down. O'Hara reminds me a little of A. Proulx; she lives in Wyoming (the book is partially autobiographical), and writes what she lives. She writes w/ insight and empathy, descriptions are vivid. This story is the second in a trilogy, My Friend Flicka being the first.

I'm presently trying to wade thru The Drifters by James Michener, and can't believe the hoorah! regarding Michener, when I compare to O'Hara. Just 2 books I happen to be reading at the same time, and there is simply no comparison.

How do some writers receive such accolades when the writing/story-telling is so poor? Thunderhead is some of the best quality writing I've seen in awhile. O'Hara catches the bleakness of life in Wyoming, at the same time the beauty, and the stark reality of horse ranching.

The story loosely revolves around a boy and his semi-wild horse, but the book is so, so much more than that. A little like Proulx, a little like C. McCarthy.

Def recommend.
This wonderful book is great for anyone who loves horses, especially teenagers.

Ken's mare, Flicka, has a white colt, a throwback to its grandfather, the wild and wicked stallion, the Albino. His father hates the Albino and thinks no good will come of any of its progeny. Ken loves the colt regardless. The colt is so ugly and has such a scrabbling gallop that although his mother named it Thunderhead, it gets known as The Goblin. The Goblin escapes out onto the range and isn't seen again for a year, when it demonstrates such an unusual gait and such speed that Ken secretly thinks he has a racehorse who can help the money problems his parents have on the ranch. The story continues with problems between Ken and his father, between Thunderhead and Banner, his father's range stallion, and between Thunderhead and the Albino.
I've loved these books for 50 years. Please, please, please, issue them in format!
I have NO problems with the story. My problems are with the publisher. I know and love the story VERY well. I ordered this copy (to replace my worn copy) and it has spelling mistakes as well as passages of the book LEFT OUT! For example, as I was reading I noticed a chapter ended (21) abruptly and, yes I checked, and they had left out a few paragraphs! VERY DISAPPOINTED!
