Bones Buried in the Dirt is a novel in parts, a series of stories about a boy named Peter, and his adventures in childhood. It's not a straight narrative as much as an exploration of the perceptions of a kid who hasn't reached that critical junior high age where they begin to doubt the world, mistrust their parents, and question what's being told to them. I've noticed that my own memories of that late elementary school period are questionable, because I didn't have the full knowledge of what was going on around me. As a child, you don't know if you're rich or poor, and you don't comprehend why your parents act the way that they do, only that they're your parents. As the story unfolded, it made me wonder about Peter's family, if his dad had a substance abuse problem, if he lived in a truly sketchy neighborhood, and if his friends and cohorts were damaged goods or not. Atkinson's writing is solid, and minimalist in a way that made this an enjoyable read. As a child of the 80s, I especially liked all of the cultural references within, like that Star Wars figures and the toys your friends had were practically the currency of childhood. My only complaint was that this was a quick read, and I could have used a full scale Richard Russo-style novel that deep dived into Peter's background or showed me what happened to him eventually in life. Overall, this was a great read though, and I appreciated the voice shown within.Product details

Authentically capturing the voice of a child is no easy task, but it is a task David S. Atkinson has accomplished with aplomb. Bones Buried in the Dirt is an unflinching look at the meanness, the heartbreak, the thousand and one little victories, triumphs, and defeats that make up childhood. Peter is an absolute delight of a narrator as we follow him though various stages of his life. By turns uproariously funny and heart wrenching, Bones Buried in the Dirt is honest and unflinching.
Having grown up as a girl with no brothers, this collection of stories gave me some insight into what goes on in a young boy's mind. Peter's early innocence is endearing; it's easy to see how he finds himself embroiled in situations with consequences far beyond his expectations. His increasing awareness of the temperaments and motives of those around him as he matures is believably gradual, if frustrating. This reader got the feeling that Peter will be fortunate to survive puberty without disappearing into an unseen psychological sinkhole.
The stories flow together nicely, though at times it was difficult to ascertain Peter's approximate age in the various episodes.
Bones Buried in the Dirt is a series of childhood memories. Not the ones you conjure when you normally think about your childhood. These are not the about your favorite video games or the best birthday you ever had. Some might call these skeletons in the closet, but here they are bones buried in the earth, the foundation of childhood, on which you build your walls and the very fortress of who you are. These are the ones you may not tell others, but they are the memories that make you think the way you do and act the way you do.
Reading this books makes you think about the very personal things that shaped your own life. It is a clever and fascinating read. Mr. Atkinson does a hauntingly wonderful job of presenting life through the eyes of a child and pulls no emotional punches. My only complaint is that the book is far too short. I have to confess, I’d love to know what becomes of the character Peter in his adult life.
Really enjoyed this collection of poignant childhood tales by David S. Atkinson. As a personal note, I usually don't like stories with a character named Peter as it just takes me out of it, but these stories were really wonderfully written so I was happy to make an exception. The stories revolve around Peter and involve a bunch of his adventures as he grows, learns about 'life'. That could come across as cheesy, but it's really well done here with subtlety, and sometimes not so subtle, moments. I really liked the stories, "Playing War," and "Burden of a Little Brother," and I found "Book Bag" to be a very moving story as well (who thought predicting the future could cause so much strife?). There are all sorts of bones buried here, the rich, thought-provoking kind that make you wonder at all the treasures hidden beneath.
