I agree with those who classify this book as mediocre, provided that by "mediocre" they actually mean bad. Some say that the series started out well and has now gone downhill. Perhaps; I'll never know. In this volume, Jim DiGriz is vacationing with his wife on a super-wealthy planet infested with plastic surgeons when she mysteriously disappears amidst a strangle cult that promises adherents a glimpse of Heaven. Jim recruits his two adults sons to help him investigate, and his old employer also sends a scientist named Copyu, a ravishing female spy, and a platoon of marines to assist. Together they find that the deranged religious leader named Slakey is (1) popping into and out of universes at will (2) duplicating himself at will, and (3) running a mysterious industrial operation in the ground beneath his "Heaven".

The book would seem to promise light-hearted science fiction adventure, with a heavy dose of humor and pulp. It doesn't deliver. The humor is basically non-existent. The persistent attempts to make jokes about Jim's sons drooling over their luscious female counterpart are not so much sexist as just annoying. The plot doesn't provide any entertainment either. The chief problem is that Jim's scientist friend, Copyu, is one of those amazing scientists who can invent anything in a matter of hours, even if it means revolutionizing all of known science. Since he's always able to hand Jim a device that stops time or pulls people from one universe to another automatically on demand, Jim never really needs any cleverness to overcome the bad guys. The book is, frankly, a bore. Things happen, but they aren't worth caring about.
