I really enjoyed this book. It's a light hearted and self depreciating look at at an Australian newly wed couple's year in Sicily. There aren't too many books that can make me laugh out loud. This one did. It's full of hilarious unfortunate incidents but underpinning it all is a real appreciation of life in Sicily, warts and all. Loved it!

Having recently spent 5 weeks in Tuscany and not getting to Sicily I was eager to read what I had missed out on. This was an enjoyable read, not of the can't put it down variety, but pleasant enough to while away a few hours. Well written and amusing and captured parts of Italian culture I had come to know over my time in Italy.
Very funny And informative. As I am going to Sicily later this year, I took note of the many towns and villages he visited.
I chose this book as haave to read it for an English exam. Being a Sicilian and having lived in Catania I can recognise every single description the writer gives the readers. As foreigner, Shamus is surprised by the weird habits and places of Sicily and every time he is not rude but he finds the ironic side in each of his adventures. I recommend it.
I wanted an easy read while I was on holiday in Sicily that would also give me some information about the island without being too dull. This book fit the bill perfectly - it was a light, funny read but also interesting and informative. I really enjoyed it and found the interesting tidbits of history and social information provided for interesting dinner conversation!
Living in Sicily, you can get accustomed to the absurdity of life on the island. The book does a good job of mixing the beauty of everyday life with historical facts and funny mishaps while navigating the island.
